12 Power Point Lessons with Audio Annotation designed for a 12 week or semester long course.

The XGameStation™ Pico Edition 2.0 is based on the technologies of its bigger brother the XGameStation™ Micro Edition. However, the Pico Edition is a more simplified unit that you assemble yourself! The XGS Pico Edition 2.0 comes with both the XGS Pico Edition 1.0 solderless breadboard and parts as well as the Pico PCB Add-On Kit, so it's two kits in one! After you build the solderless breadboard version then you can solder your unit together and have a completely portable embedded game system that you can re-program. The complete assembly instructions, architecture, and programming of the Pico Edition comes with the kit on CD. The Pico Edition may be simple, but it packs a punch with a Ubicom SX28 microcontroller running at a blazing 80.000MHz.Additionally, the PCB version of the Pico Edition that you will solder together has a 7-Segment readout, 15-pin interface, A/V jacks, and a built in Directional Gamepad, for a completely portable mini-game console.

"The Black Art of Video Game Console Design" is written for the programmer and/or hobbyist interested in software game development, but also wants to understand the hardware games are implemented on.This book assumes no prior knowledge of Electrical Engineering or Computer Architecture, but takes you on a breathtaking journey from atomic semiconductor theory to the design and construction of basic video game consoles that you can build and write your own games for! Included in the book is the entire design of numerous embedded game systems including the XGameStation Pico Edition 1.0 (kit included).

"The Black Art of Video Game Console Design"with its 900+ pages covers everything you need to know to design your own game console including:

  • Basic atomic physics and semiconductor theory primer.
  • Introduction to circuit analysis; current, voltage, and resistance.
  • Analog design using discrete components.
  • Digital electronics and Boolean algebra.
  • Physical hardware construction and prototyping techniques.
  • Combinational logic and advanced integrated circuit building blocks.
  • Finite state machine design.
  • Computer architecture and design.
  • Understanding and using microprocessors and microcontrollers.
  • Developing software for embedded systems.
  • Designing video (NTSC/VGA), audio, and input device systems.
  • Interfacing and communications.
  • The complete design and discussion of the XGS Game Consoles.

Bonus Material

Includes a complete eCopy of the best seller Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus.

CD-ROM Contains

  • eBooks in Adobe Acrobat PDF format.
  • PCB and circuit simulation tools.
  • Data sheets.
  • Demos and source code.
  • Complete designs to numerous embedded systems including the XGS Game Consoles.

Sample slide from Lesson 1 on basic electronics theory.Learn about semiconductor theory and the properties of these devices.Learn construction techniques such as solderless breadboarding.Sample slide from Lesson 3 on digital electronics and Boolean Algebra.Sample slide from Lesson 6 discussing sound synthesis techniques.Learn how to design and read complex schematics and designs like this embedded system.Learn to take your designs and turn them into PCBs with industry tools.Sample slide from Lesson 9 on soldering techniques. The complete XGS Pico 2.0 you build in the course.Sample slide from Lesson 11 on writing games for embedded systems.Learn how to reverse engineer and interface to game controllers.Learn the how TVs and NTSC work inside and out.Generate your own NTSC displays by controlling the raster yourself.Sample slide from Lesson 12 on emulators and simulators.Master advanced designs like this when you complete the course!Learn about numerous retro and historical processors like the famous 6502!

The Game Console Starter 2.0 "Self Study Course" is a CD-ROM based 12 lesson embedded systems and game console design course. Designed to be covered in 12 weeks (one lesson per week), the course contains everything you need to learn about these fascinating system (make sure to check out downloads at bottom of page).
The kit includes everything you see including the XGameStation™ Pico Edition 2.0 Kit which includes both the solderless and PCB version of the XGS Pico Edition. Also included in the kit is a hardcopy of the one of a kind book "The Black Art of Video Game Console Design" written by André LaMothe. Additional components include the SX-Key programmer, Mini-USB cable, Power Supply, Digital Multimeter, Soldering Iron (plus solder), NES compatible Game Controller, and additional ICs and discrete components for the lesson plan and experiments.
Each of the 12 lessons are designed as Microsoft Power Point Presentations with complete Audio Annotation for each lesson by MS. EE. Instructor Joshua Hintze. For each lesson, you will first read the suggested material in the book, then view and listen to the Power Point Presentations. Following many lessons are Experiments which you will perform to further your understanding of the material (some with videos). Additionally, each lesson has a short Quiz and finally there is a Final Exam to test your knowledge of the entire course.
Once completed, you will have the knowledge necessary to not only design and understand microcontroller based embedded systems, but to create game consoles as well!
